Response to list of OTC drugs in India
------------------------------------------
According to my information, the term 'OTC DRUGS' is not officially
recognized by the Drugs & Cosmetics Act. Rule 123 of the Drugs &
Cosmetics Rules exempts drugs included in Schedule K of the Rules from
the requirements of Chapter IV of the Act, which deals with manuacture,
sale and distribution of drugs and cosmetics.
The so-called 'household remedies' are listed at Sl. 13 of the Sch. K.
It is a small out-of-date list of 15 items. The sooner it is scrapped
and Replaced by a practical list of OTC drugs the better. Let DSPRUD or
a similar organization constitute a small Working Group to cater to the
problem. We cannot expect the Government to do it. They have far too
many things on their hands and minds with inadequate infrastructure.
