Kerala govt sanctions Rs.54 cr emergency fund to meet medicine,
equipment shortage in hospitals
---------------------------------------------------------------
P B Jayakumar, Thiruvananthapuram
The Kerala government has sanctioned Rs.54 crore for immediate
utilization to meet the shortage of medical infrastructure and
medicines at various medical colleges and government hospitals in the
state.
According to health department sources, Rs.25 crore of the allotted
amount, which is outside the purview of routine budgetary allocation,
will be utilized to purchase medicines and Rs.19 crore will be used to
purchase necessary medical equipments for the medical colleges and GHs
and Rs.10 crore will be allotted to the family welfare department.
Various MCHs and GHs have been experiencing severe shortage of
medicines, especially vaccines due to various reasons, said the
sources.
Since numerous sophisticated equipments are lying idle with various
government hospitals and medical colleges in the state due to shortage
of adequate staff to run the machines, the department has decided to
impart training programmes for doctors and other paramedics of the GHs
and MCHs to operate the machines. A meeting in this regard involving
district medical officers, district hospital superintendents and senior
officials of the health department was held in Thiruvananthapuram, last
week.
Instructions have been given to appoint technicians on an emergency
ground and damaged machines would be replaced through buy back
arrangement with the medical equipment suppliers, said the sources. The
department is also considering rearranging the work schedule of
laboratory staff and paramedics so that 24-hour services are offered at
casualty and laboratory, said sources.
