Anti-TB medication launched in single dose sachet

Our Bureau, Mumbai
For the millions of people all over the world, who suffer from
tuberculosis, the new year has brought a special gift ? a single dose
sachet, which contains all the medicines that they would need in the
form of granules. Thus the hassle of swallowing a large number of
capsules and tablets every day could soon belong to the past.
Maharashtra governor Mohd Fazal at a national conference on
tuberculosis held here recently released the sachet, which was
developed by Maneesh Pharmaceuticals, a modest sized Mumbai-based
company. This is the first time in the world that anti-TB medication is
available in a pouch form.
Patients of tuberculosis can now be rid of the disease with the help of
the granules, which can be mixed with a glass of water and swallowed at
breakfast time. The treatment regimen lasts for just eight weeks.
?The problem of non-compliance with treatment instructions, which is
the main reason for the development of drug-resistance (MDR) could be
avoided to a large extent with the advent of the sachet of medicines,?
said Dr Sudhir Dagaokar, professor pharmacology at Somaiya Medical
College.
