P B Jayakumar, Chennai
Supported by the Delhi Society for Promotion of Rational Use of Drugs
(DSPRUD) and the India-WHO programme on Essential Drugs, various arms
of the healthcare sector in Tamil Nadu may soon join to form a society
to promote rational use of medicine in the state.
The initial aim of the Society for Rational Use of Drugs would be to
create awareness among the medical fraternity and public on drugs,
actions, reaction and abuse. In this direction, two workshops, attended
by numerous pharma industrialists and professionals, pharmacists,
doctors, paramedical staff and patients were recently held at the Sree
Ramachandra Medical College and the Madras Medical College in Chennai,
in association with DSPRUD and WHO-India, said Dr MD Nair, Chief
Coordinator of the workshops and a senior pharmaceutical industry
professional in the country.
The participants at the workshop felt that it was imperative to discuss
and formulate guidelines for various therapeutic diseases, and felt the
state government should come out with a comprehensive state health
policy.
Dr Nair said WHO has come forward to assist and promote formation of
Society for Rational Use of Drugs in various regional, state and
national levels.
He noted that WHO was in the process of helping other states and
various countries emulate the 'Delhi Model' in promoting cost-effective
medicines and efforts to prevent irrational use of medicines. Already
six to seven states in the country have a centralized drug procuring
system in place, which helps to procure more medicines. Tamil Nadu has
a centralized drug procurement system already in place in the form of
the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC), noted Dr Nair.
