PRDUC course announcement
-------------------------
Dear all,
4th INTERNATIONAL COURSE ON PROMOTING RATIONAL DRUG USE IN THE
COMMUNITY
PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT
This is a preliminary announcement for the next course on Promoting
Rational Drug Use in the Community pending final logistical
arrangements. The course, conducted in English, will take place in
Swaziland from 2-14 November. A flyer and application form will be
distributed in the near future and will also be available on the EDM
website at: http://www.who.int/medicines/organization/par/prduc.html
There will be a further announcement on E-drug once these are actually
available.
This very successful two-week international training course is jointly
organized by WHO's Department of Essential Drugs and Medicines Policy,
the University of Amsterdam and the Royal Tropical Institute,
Amsterdam. It is intended for staff from ministries of health,
universities and development agencies, nongovernmental and other
organizations, and interested individuals.
Over two weeks and working with very experienced international faculty,
participants will gain "hands on" experience in how to:
* effectively identify and prioritize community drug use problems;
* choose and develop appropriate intervention strategies and
communication channels;
* pretest materials;
* evaluate impact;
* fundraise and network for support and sustainability.
The course emphasizes that interventions must take into account the
social and economic context in which health- and medicine-seeking
behaviour take place, and be developed with community input.
Teaching methods in this highly participatory course include group
activities, fieldwork, presentations and discussions. Participants
spend the final two days preparing a detailed plan of action to tackle
an important community drug use problem in their home country. They
also receive a set of session materials and a small core communications
library.
The fee of US$ 2,950 covers tuition, course materials and shared hotel
accommodation in Swaziland. Single room are available at an extra cost
payable by participants. There will also be a reduced fee for local
participants.
