National Training Course in Teaching Rational Drug Therapy, New Delhi,
India, 5th-11th September 2002
---------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a 7 day national course sponsored by the Essential Drugs and
Other Medicines Department, World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva,
and organized by the Delhi Society for Promotion of Rational Use of
Drugs. This course will highlight the teaching of rational drug
therapy or the ?P? drug concept using Problem Based Learning as the
format.
Choosing a drug is often regarded as a matter of knowing what drug to
prescribe. However, choice as part of clinical reasoning is a complex
process and the best drug is a relative concept. Medical students who
are not trained adequately in pharmaco-therapeutics will be more
vulnerable to influences that cause irrational prescribing.
In order to provide a systemic approach to teaching of therapeutics and
rational drug use, the concept of ?P? drug has been conceived. This
system uses a technique to teach analytical deductions of
pharmaco-therapeutics. It involves logical application of the
knowledge of Pharmacology while choosing a treatment for a patient.
Who should attend this course?
Physicians and pharmacologists from teaching hospitals, who are
interested in improving teaching methodologies - those in a position
to train medical students and implement the pharmaco-therapy as taught
in this course, in their respective institutions, will be preferred.
Two to three participants from each institution will be selected.
Middle order teaching faculty who can conduct such programmes in future
will be given preference.
Objective

including aspects of Rational Use of Drugs. It will also evolve an
objective evaluation system.

The course is based on "Guide to good prescribing" a WHO publication,
which is being practised in many medical colleges all over the world.
The training course will be highly participatory in nature. The
resource persons are from India and abroad. They have vast experience
in teaching pharmaco-therapy and in conducting such workshops.
The course content is divided into
