avaient-ils commencé à être distribués dans le pays et s'agit-il d'un rappel

Un laboratoire pharmaceutique chinois se prépare à rappeler des milliers de
doses d'un anti-malaria fourni au Kenya après avoir découvert des
contrefacteurs.

Le vice-président de Holley-Cotec Pharmaceuticals a annoncé que 20,000 doses
de Duo-cotecxin seront retirées de la vente.

Il a indiqué à la BBC que des analyses du produit contrefait ont montré
qu'il a une très faible concentration en principe actif et que les patients
qui en prendraient ne seraient donc pas traités. On estime que la malaria
tue 35.000 personnes chaque année au Kenya.

Duo-cotecxin est l'une des combinaisons à doses fixes d'artémisine très
recommandée par l'OMS pour traiter la malaria. Il est largement fourni dans
les hôpitaux publics et privés au Kenya.

La dose complète de Duo-cotecxin coûte environ $5 au Kenya, alors que la
contrefaçon est vendue pour moins de $1.

Nouvelle technologie

Le Ministère de la Santé a lancé une campagne pour arrêter les contrefaçons
qui circulent au Kenya.
Le Dr Willy Akwale, qui dirige l'unité de lutte gouvernementale contre la
malaria, a déclaré qu'il s'agit du premier cas de contrefaçon d'une
combinaison à base d'artémisine.

« Il y a déjà eu de nombreuses contrefaçons d'anti-maria à base de soufre
par le passé, ce qui nous a conduit à faire face à des difficultés dans la
lutte contre la maladie, » a déclaré le Dr Akwale à laBBC, BBC's Focus on
Africa programme.

Mr. Eric Law, vice-président de Holley-Cotec Pharmaceuticals, a déclaré
qu'ils devaient localiser l'origine de la contrefaçon, mais que son origine
asiatique semblait claire.

Mr Law a annoncé sur le site internet de la BBC (BBC News Website) : « Nous
allons introduire une nouvelle technologie pour sécuriser les doses qui
seront fournies en remplacement du produit retiré ».

Des responsables de la santé craignent une catastrophe globale en santé si
le commerce des contrefaçons va grandissant, conduisant à la dissémination
de la résistance.

Désolé du temps mis à te répondre.
L'information sur la contrefaçon de Duo-Cotecxin a été reçue par le service 
des substances vénéneuses (Pharmacy and Poisons Board) qui dépend des 
autorités de réglementation pharmaceutique au Kenya: un utilisateur se 
plaignant de "manque d'efficacité".
Les inspecteurs ont vérifié la présence de boîtes circulant dans le pays 
sans enregistrement. Un communiqué de presse a été émis pour permettre à la 
population d'identifier le faux produit du vrai.
S'ensuivit cette information erronée d'un rappel du produit; j'aimerais 
confirmer qu'il n'y a pas, et il n'y a pas eu de rappel de la contrefaçon. 
Le fabricant a fait venir de nouvelles boîtes du produit original, avec un 
hologramme distinctif pour en faciliter l'identification. Le fabricant, par 
le biais des distributeurs, a choisi de remplacer les boîtes d'origine par 
de nouvelles boîtes originales avec l'hologramme
Une conférence de presse a eu lieu plus tôt cette semaine pour clarifier la 
situation; l'article en est disponible mais je ne peux le joindre à ce

Malaria drugs recalled in Kenya

A Chinese pharmaceutical firm plans to recall thousands of anti-malarial
drugs supplied to Kenya after discovering a counterfeit syndicate.
The vice-president of Holley-Cotec Pharmaceuticals said 20,000 doses of
Duo-cotecxin will be removed from sale.
He told the BBC an analysis of the counterfeit product showed it had very
low active ingredients and patients taking it would not be cured.
An estimated 35,000 people die of malaria in Kenya each year.
Duo-cotecxin is one of the artemisinin-based combination therapy drugs
highly recommended by World Health Organization to treat malaria and is
widely supplied in government and private hospitals in Kenya.
A full dose of Duo-cotecxin costs about $5 in Kenya, the counterfeited drug
is being sold for less than $1.

New technology

The Ministry of Health has been spearheading a campaign to crack down on
counterfeit drugs that are readily available in the Kenyan market.
Dr Willy Akwale, who heads the government anti-malaria control unit, said
this is the first case of a counterfeit supply of artemisinin combination
therapy drugs.

"There have been many counterfeits on the sulphur-based anti-malaria drugs
before, forcing us to have difficulties in countering the disease," Dr
Akwale told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme.

Eric Law, Holley-Cotec Pharmaceuticals' vice-president, said they are yet to
locate the source of the counterfeits, but there is strong evidence linking
the supplies to Asia.

"We are now going to introduce a new technology to tamper-proof the doses
that will be supplied to replace the withdrawn drugs," Mr Law told the BBC
News Website.
Health officials warn of a global health catastrophe if a growing trade in
fake anti-malarial drugs leads to widespread resistance.
Sophisticated trans-national gangs are thought to be behind the counterfeit
drugs, a fast-growing multibillion dollar business.

Meanwhile, the Kenyan government said on Thursday that there has been a
dramatic rise in the number of children sleeping under insecticide treated
mosquito nets.

It said that a two-year campaign to provide nets at subsidised prices has
resulted in more than two-thirds of under five-year-olds sleeping under

Dear Libby,

Sorry for this delayed response.
Information on 'fake' Duo-Cotecxin in the market was received at the
Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB- the Drug Regulatory Authority in Kenya)- a
consumer complained of 'lack of effectiveness'.
The Inspectors verified the presence of the unregistered packs circulating
in the market. A press release was issued- for the public to be able to
identify the fake from the genuine product.
There was this false assumption that a 'recall' of the product had been
effected- i wish to confirm that there was / is no recall of the said
'counterfeit' Duo-Cotecxin.
The manufacturers have brought in a new pack of the genuine product-
containing a distinctive hologram for ease of identification. The
manufacturers, through the main distributors, have opted for a replacement
of the original / genuine packs with the new (genuine) packs containing the
hologram.
A press conference was called upon earlier in the week to clarify this
issue- article available but cannot attach onto e-drug.
