vont être organisés par la GTZ et ATHÖG du 25 février au 8 mars 2002 et du 2

Quality Management in International Health
This course is organised jointly by the Department of Tropical Hygiene &
Public Health (ATHÖG) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische
Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) mbH.
There are two courses scheduled for 2002: Course A) 25 February 2002 ? 08
March
Course B) 02 September 2002 ? 13 September
Contents Overview
This course of study covers the general principles and frameworks for
defining and promoting the quality of health systems and services including
processes, models and tools for assuring and evaluat-ing quality. The course
will use case studies from Germany and other countries, and the experience
of those within the course, to illustrate issues in promoting and evaluating
quality specific to low and mid-dle-income countries. Included in the course
is a two-day certified European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM)
assessor training. This training involves an obligatorily 2 days of
additional, private study of training material prior to the beginning of the
course.
Objectives
To enable health professionals and managers to understand and apply the
concepts and principles of quality and quality management and to improve
their personal and technical skills for quality promotion and evaluation.
By the end of the Course participants should be able to:
Þ Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of improving and
assuring quality in health care systems and services globally and locally
Þ Describe a global overview of quality management activities in different
regions of the world with different stakeholders
Þ Understand trends of quality promotion and evaluation models in Europe and
critically analyse their transferability
Þ Describe the basic principles and processes for evaluating health services
? quality including accreditation, certification and licensing
Þ Describe key aspects of implementing quality management within an
organization or in a na-tional health system including strategic management
of change
Þ Apply relevant theories and tools to an identified quality issue within a
specific area
Target Group
Public health professionals with minimum 2 years experience working within
planning, management and evaluation in the health sector; interest and
experience in quality and improving ?health? or health care systems and
services. This course is part of the TropEd European Masters Programme in
Inter-national Health, and accords credits according to the European Credit
Transfer Scheme (ECTS). The course will be taught in English.
The number of participants is limited to 22.

Duration
2 weeks/90 hours (36 hours lectures, 24 hours group work and presentations
and 30 hours self-directed), equivalent to 3 ECTS points.

Location
The course will be held in Heidelberg, or surroundings, Germany.
Registration
Your written registration should be received by the Academy for Postgraduate
Education not later than 20 December 2001 for the February course and 1 July
2002 for the September course. Please regis-ter as soon as possible as the
number of participants is limited
Course fee
The total fee for the course is ? 1500-; fee for those enrolled in the
TropEd programme is ? 1000.
The tuition fee covers coursework and printed materials and a bi-weekly pass
for the Heidelberg public transportation system but does not include
accommodation, insurance or other personal living costs during the stay.
