Estimadas Raffaella y Emilia,

Roche to hand Brazil patent for anti-Chagas drug
Reuters, 03.31.03, 3:48 PM ET
SAO PAULO, Brazil (Reuters) - Pharmaceutical group Roche Holding AG said
Monday it will give Brazil the rights and technology to a drug that
helps treat a disease responsible for the deaths of about 6,000
Brazilians a year.
Following a request by the Brazilian government, Roche will donate to
the country the patent to its drug Benznidazole, which is used to treat
Chagas disease. An official ceremony to celebrate the deal will take
place on Wednesday at the company's headquarters in Basel, Switzerland.
According to a statement by Roche, Chagas affects 18 million people a
year in North and South America, with Brazil accounting for 5 million to
6 million of those cases.
Caused by the Trypanosoma cruzi parasite, Chagas disease can initially
cause flu-like symptoms and then lie dormant for 10 to 20 years before
entering a chronic phase that can damage the heart and digestive system.
Some infected people never develop symptoms, while others die.
Transmitted by small reduviid bugs, or "kissing bugs," that live in the
cracks and holes of abode and thatched houses, Chagas tends to affect
low-income sectors of society and can be deadly in 10 to 20 years.
Under the terms of the agreement, Brazil will take full control of the
drug's production and could even become a provider to other countries.
Roche will stop producing the drug once Brazil begins making it on its
own.
Brazil has aggressively pressured pharmaceutical companies to cut their
prices for drugs, especially those related to AIDS, often threatening to
break patents if prices were not lowered.
Benznidazole was launched in 1980 and has been used more than 200,000
times in Brazil.
