E-drug: Roche Viracept (nelfinavir) price breaks bank(cont)
---------------------------------------------

Daniel Bereman's note illustrates the problems that occurred when Brazil
stopped buying generic ARVs. Brazil has only bought generic ARV's that
were patented before it changed its patent law in 1996. For newer ARVs like
nelfinavir or efavirenz, Brazil has negotiated with big pharma for price
discounts. Unfortunately, this has eliminated the only real market today
for generic ARVs, and as a consequence, there are not yet the type of cheap
generic versions that you see for the pre-1996 drugs.
