E-drug: Workshop on Pharmacoeconomics
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Announcement: Workshop on Pharmacoeconomics:
"Decentralization and equity in access to drugs", Bali, Indonesia,
26-26 September 2002.

With the enactment of decentralization and devolution, local
governments in many developing countries will have to plan and
purchase the drugs and supplies needed for their respective area.
Since before this changes planning and purchasing of drugs and
supplies is managed directly by central authorities; the capacity of
local health officials need to be improved.

A three-day workshop has been designed to provide technical
knowledge in the methods used to improve equity in drugs
provision. The workshop will provide detailed instruction and
practical experience in measuring cost analysis and the cost
effectiveness of Drugs Provision. Quantification of the value of
health-care products, especially drugs, is seen as an increasingly
important process, and is central to the role of health services.

The use of these drugs in practice will be increasingly determined
not only by their effectiveness but also by the cost of technology.
In essence the rising cost of health care will force decisions to be
made regarding both the effectiveness of the technology and the
overall cost implications.

Therefore the purpose of this workshop is to discuss various
techniques, tools, and strategies to evaluate the economic
contribution of specific drug therapies at local level and for
individual patient needs. Pharmacoeconomics has been defined as
the description and analysis of the cost of the drug therapy to
health-care systems and society. In essence, pharmacoeconomic
analysis uses tools for improving the planning and provision of
drugs, encouragement of rational use of drugs and improving the
drug planning.

Objectives of the workshop are to:
1. to empower local health officials in decentralized districts/cities
in planning, purchasing, distribution and uses of drugs and
supplies effectively, efficiently and ensuring access of the poor
