The National Institutes of Health and the Canadian Institutes of Health
Research 4th Annual Summer Institute in Maternal-Fetal Pharmacology
July 18-24, 2008
Doubletree Hotel, Burlington, Vermont
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and
the Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) at the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Institute of Human Development, Child
and Youth Health (IHDCYH) at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research
(CIHR) are pleased to announce their 4th annual Summer Institute in
Maternal-Fetal Pharmacology.
The Institute provides training for clinical and non-clinical scientists
who are considering academic careers in studying therapeutics during
pregnancy, the perinatal period, and lactation. Presently, the pregnant
mother and her unborn infant are rarely included in therapeutic studies,
leading to orphaning from the benefits of drug therapy. The main
objective of the Institute is to foster the development of a critical
mass of researchers in this neglected area.
Course Methods
Up to 20 applicants will be selected and mentored by leading faculty
from American and Canadian Universitities, National Institute of Child
Health and Human Development (NICHD). The course format will encourage
small-group interactions and problem-based learning. The course includes
preparatory work and assignments, which will be sent to participants one
month ahead of time. Each participant will be expected to develop a
preclinical or clinical drug therapy protocol before the course. These
protocols will be discussed in small groups of approximately 7 trainees
and 2 or 3 faculty members, and subsequently by the larger (plenary)
group. Participants will also be encouraged to bring their own protocol
in development for a "Protocol Clinic" with a faculty member who has
expertise and interest in the relevant research area.
The Summer Institute will combine interactive and hands-on learning with
expert lectures. Special focus will be given to interaction between
faculty members and participants.
Faculty members are national and international leaders in various
aspects of obstetric and perinatal pharmacology.
Eligibility and How to Apply
Applicants must be actively engaged in research or enrolled in a formal
research training program, or hold a PhD or a health professional degree
(or equivalent). The health professional degree must be in a field such
as medicine, pharmacy, nursing, pharmacology or toxicology.
