E-DRUG: Folic acid 5 or 0.4 mg for spina bifida prophylaxis? (4)
----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Muhammad Shafique,

I sent your question to a gynecologist. His answer was as follows:

Folic acid 5 mg is safe and proven for people at risk for Spina Bifida. So you can use 5 mg as far as he knows.

In the Netherlands there was this discussion about folic acid in prevention of spina bifida in doses as 0.5 or 0.4 mg. In prevention for Spina Bifida 0.5mg is used for people with no familiar occurrence of Spina Bifida. In high risk families 5 mg is used and safe to use.

So if 5 mg folic acid is available you can use this safely
