E-DRUG: India: Life-saving drugs to be cheaper (3)
--------------------------------------------------
Dear E-druggers
Since access to essential drugs is a human right and since price of any commodity however essential is subject to market forces:
It is worthwhile considering a proposal wherein the Indian government can itself start producing the essential drugs, preferably in generic version by reviving many public sector units like IDPL, Hindusthan Antibiotics and other state run units.
This way the government can set a standard on pricing, by selling their products at a competitive and reasonable price all for the betterment/health of the common man and also eventually reduce the prices of branded and branded generics in the market.

[Not sure that government production is necessarily cheaper than that of the private sector... Anyway, the question was whether price controls work or can work. Any body else on that one? Wilbert, moderatpr]
