E-DRUG: Extended release formulations of ofloxacin?

Dear E- druggers,

I have been trying to understand the rationale/advantages of having ofloxacin in extended release preparations with the belief that it allows for a once daily dosing. Meanwhile, my entire research for the pharmacokinetics of this molecule suggests that the conventional formulations can as well be taken once daily. What?s more, you never find this product in the western world. Extended release preparations of this product are becoming more popular particularly in India. 

Are there really any advantages to this product despite increased cost? My fear is that we might end up having extended release ceftriaxone, if we continue like this. I would like to be enlightened if any one has some information on the advantages the technology offers with respect to ofloxacin. I can understand the need for ciprofloxacin ER, but ofloxacin ER beats me.
