In my opinion, VEN is a priority setting technique that is useful in formulary development and planning requirements, in addition to ABC. It is not clear how one can apply the same to prescription pattern analysis. The set of criteria that one would be looking for in prescription pattern analysis are quite different...for example, in my set up, tetanus toxoid injection is classified as Vital and its use is highest in the Accident and Emergency unit. My prescription pattern analysis here would not be looking at whether tetanus toxoid is vital or not, but whether
it is prescribed appropriately. The INRUD/WHO drug use indicator studies are the best for prescription pattern analysis
