Dear Geeta,

For European countries, there is a paper: 'Availability of medicines in
the European Union: results from the EURO-Medicines project' by F
Folino-Gallo, T Walley, J Frolich, A Carvajal, I Edwards
in the European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Vol 57, No 6-7, 2001.
This shows between 1000 and 2000 active ingredients, but up to 19,000
trade names, available in European countries.

We are trying to determine and compare the numbers and types of medicines
available in New Zealand, Australia, US, and UK, but it is quite a
labour-intensive process. We are using published list of licensed
products. I have no idea how it could be done in developing countries.
