E-DRUG: Expensive pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (2)
--------------------------------------

Dear e-druggers,

[Marie posted a message on 26 April asking countries what price they had negotiated with the supplier, Wyeth. She got no replies. Here is a follow-up. KM, moderator]

A commentary in the Lancet this week (free access) makes the case for
pneumoccocable conjugate vaccine (PCV) vaccination in developing
countries .
[http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140673606687035/fulltext. Pls repair link + you have to register, which is free]

Authors (most of them declaring conflicts of interests) 'urge international donors, especially the GAVI Alliance, and industry to negotiate sustainable affordable pricing of vaccines for developing countries' but do not mention that where it has been licensed, 7-valent vaccine - PCV7 - is the most
expensive paediatric vaccine to date. The price of a single dose in Europe
or America ranges from 40 Euros to 69 Euros (3 or 4 doses are needed for
full immunisation).

Anybody interested in this? Should PCV-7 to be added to EPI? Another war of prices coming?
