Dear Lenny,
You may look for the matter from other side which may help you to focus on the subject of your dissertation. You may consider " life saving drugs" instead of life threatening diseases. Though the list varies from country to country, state to state even hospital to hospital. You may also focus on " neglected diseases" which are considered as life threatening disease.
