E-DRUG: RFI: doxycycline agelimits and quinine malaria dosages
--------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings again E-Druggers,
Doxycycline: Is there a reason for the different age limits in paediatric
use of doxycycline for malaria prophylaxis and treatment? WHO, Micromedex
and Vibramycin product leaflet recommend use in children above eight years
old, but the British National Formulary recommends its use only in children
above twelve years old. Any comments on this?
Quinine: Most sources recommend avoiding the quinine IV loading dose if a
patient has been administered quinine, quinidine or mefloquine during the
previous 24 hours. The Oxford Handbook of Tropical Medicines 2005 included
chloroquine and dropped quinidine. May this be a typo or should chloroquine
be taken into account now when considering IV quinine loading doses?
Thank you once again, best regards,
Kae
