E-drug: Out Patient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (cont'd)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear all,
As a practicing physician in my native country Venezuela we used
Out Patient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) and not
necesarilly in patients that can not swallow, has acute GE with V&D,
etc. It is my understanding that they still do. In the general population
the OPAT is perceived as more effective than oral agents. If the
consideration is for IV administration, then there is more reluctancy.
Obviously physicians not only take into consideration that is a more
cost-effective practice that will reduce hospital admissions but also
that it is well received. It is a common practice.
I have research the topic and found these references on the Internet.
