E-drug: Codeine in cough mixtures (cont)
---------------------------------------------

Dear friends,

In Thailand codeine containing cough mixtures are classified as narcotic drugs
schedule 3. All combine drugs and can be dispensed by pharmacist without
prescription.

From MIMS Thailand issue 3 of 2001, there are 13 cough mixtures with codeine
with the following formula:
1.) Per 5 ml. tripolidine HCl 1.25 mg., pseudoephedrine HCl 30 mg., codeine
phosphate 10 mg.
2.) Per 5 ml. diphenhydramine HCl 14 mg., codeine phosphate 5.7 mg.,
ammonium chloride 135 mg., sodium citrate 57 menthol 1.1 mg., alcohol 1%
3.) Per 5 ml. promethazine HCl 3.6/4 mg., codeine phosphate 9 mg.
4.) Per 5 ml. or tab. codeine phosphate 10 mg., guaifenesin 100 mg.
5.) Per tab. codeine phosphate 10 mg., glyceryl guaiacolate 100 mg., terpin
hydrate 130 mg.

Most preparations recommend both to adult and children under 12 or even 6
years. Some are even produced from developed countries, e.g. USA and
Europe. These need critical re-assessment as they are already abused here.

Although Thai FDA has launched the re-evaluation policy since 1991
and the first
group of drugs proposed to be re-evaluated was cough and cold remedies. But
since then there was no specific legal action came out.

Cheers,
