E-drug: Re: Evaluation of brand names (cont)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think this issue of product identity by brand name may be affecting
several products. A case in point in Kenya is with the Dettol range of
antiseptics each of which have a different chemical in them but all
referred
to as Dettol. It seems this practice is commom with non prescription
products
(Coldrex, Tylenol etc)

[I am not sure I fully agree. In the case of e.g. Tylenol there is a tale
to the name distinguishing one from the other, e.g. Tylenol cold and flu,
Tylenol extra strength etc. Not a very good way of labelling though! May be
the Dettol products also have tales to the Dettol name?
Same brand may contain different substances in different countries
unfortunately. I came across one example recently: Norgesic. This is most
unfortunate, but probably not easy to change. However, within a country,
the regulatory authority is responsible and should never allow this to
happen. In Norway, when a manufacturer changes the substance(s) in a
product, he has to change as well. (although I think some painkillers were
allowed to change from acetylsalicylic acid to paracetamol some 20 years
ago without having to change name). KM, moderator]
