E-drug: Consumption & quantification of drugs in Nepal

Consumption & Quantification of Modern Drugs for Human Use in
Nepal.

Department of Drug Administration,
Ministry of Health, Newbaneshwor, Bijulibazar, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to estimate the national
consumption of modern drugs, as well as to identify and quantify
some selected drugs.

The study covered fiscal year 1999/2000.

Results show that:

1. Drugs worth Rs. 1 billion 50 million (US$ 20.5 million) were
produced by the national drug industries.

2. Drugs worth Rs. 3 billion 15 million (US$42 million) were
imported by private companies, and Rs. 1 billion 25 million
(US$ 16.7 million) from other agencies.

3. Kathmandu Valley alone consumed 26.3% of the total
consumption.

4. Amoxycillin was the highest selling drug of the domestic
industries.

5. Vitamins were the highest selling drugs of the imported drugs.

6. Total drug consumption in the year 1999/2000 was Rs. 5907
million (US$ 78.75 million).

7. 26% of the consumption was met by national industries.

8. The annual increment of the consumption has been 18.8%.

9. Per capita annual expenditure for drugs was Rs. 255.00 (US
$3.4) (total population of Nepal according to 2001 sensus is
2.32 million).

The study was conducted by Pharmaceutical Horizon of Nepal
(PHON) for the Department of Drug Administration (DDA), Ministry
of Health, HMG / Nepal.
