Methodological Perspectives in Health Services Research

The information on the above mentioned course has been
somewhat delayed, but here it is. Experiences from previous
courses shows that the participants have found it very valuable, so
we take the opportunity to present the flyer including detailed
information (below). We hope that you will be interested.

The course, to be held in Denmark, has a global focus, so we would
be happy to see participants from all over the world.

Invitation to enrol in a topical course

There is a strong international development concerning professional
activities aiming at quality assurance in health care and needs to
meet patient related problems. Concurrently, demands for research
that analyse, document and assess professional activities as well as
patients' behaviours and experiences are increasing. To this end
research competence within a wide variety of research methods is
needed.

The Royal Danish School of Pharmacy has for a decade offered a
successful course on methodology in health services research with
special reference to the field of medicines.

This course addresses PhD students and other professionals
interested in improving their ability to design, conduct and evaluate
research with special reference to health services and the use of
medicines.

Participants may be researchers or practitioners employed in
universities, the pharmaceutical industry, primary health care, the
hospital sector and public administration.

The course provides an understanding of major principles and
methods in health services research. The methodologies taught are
applied to issues dealing with medicine use and related professional
activities.

We hereby invite you to enrol in the next course.

Content
The course comprises lectures, group discussions, workshops,
AV-presentations and individual
assignments.

The course is based on the participants' active involvement and
makes use of their own research projects.

Participants will be asked to forward a description of a project they
are involved in or would like to discuss. These descriptions will be
utilised in different sessions. Further details will be forwarded to the
participants.

The course will deal with topics such as:

* The research process
* Overview of research methods
* Survey methods, incl. questionnaires
* Qualitative research, incl. interviewing, observational methods,
focus groups
* Philosophy of medicine
* Research ethics
* Dissemination of research
* Publication requirements
* Scrutinising articles

Relevant examples from health care and medicine use will be
introduced throughout the course.

Teaching material
Textbooks on methodology and a selection of articles will be used
as teaching material. Details will be forwarded. A selection of
books, periodicals and articles are available during the course.

Language
The language of the course will be English

Location
The course will take place at Kystg?rden in Nyborg, Fyn

Time
Starting Time: Sunday, January 13, 2002 at 2 p.m.
Closing Time: Friday, January 18, 2002 at 4 p.m.

Accommodation and meals are included in the fee.
It is expected that participants stay at the centre. Single rooms are
available.

Fee
Participation is normally free for Danish PhD students who apply
through their university. Otherwise the course fee is 12,700 DKK
including meals and accommodation.

Expenses for textbooks and other teaching material will be approx.
600 DKK.

The organisers are searching for sponsorships.

Enrolment
As the number of participants is limited to 16, it is recommended to
enrol as soon as possible. Applications must be received before 1.

Certificate
On the basis of the individual performance, the course directors
give a pass/fail. Those, who have passed, will receive a certificate.
