According to US policy analysts the US secretary for health and
human services, Tommy Thompson, has selected Lester Crawford,
the director of Georgetown University's Center for Food and
Nutrition, as his choice to head the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA).
According to Ira Loss and Marlene Grabau from Washington
Analysis, Crawford has also been backed by Senator Edward
Kennedy who had opposed previous nominees put forward by the
Bush administration. Crawford has served as the director of the
FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine and has spent most of his
career in academic and government posts.
Crawford has worked in the private sector and was the executive
vice president of the National Food Processors Association and
worked as a researcher at the American Cyanamid Company. The
selection process is still far from complete. Nominees will have
checks done by the FBI, which are delayed because resources have
been diverted to investigating the US terrorist attacks, and will then
go through a Senate confirmation process. Haroon Ashraf
