E-DRUG: African Pharmaceutical Students Federation Launched!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---

Have you ever wondered why the African pharmaceutical student community
never organised itself into one body representing the interests of its
supporters globally? Well, the answer is quite simple; the African
Pharmaceutical Students Federation (APSF) has been waiting for the correct
time to launch itself without inhibitions. This coincides with a period in
our history commonly described as the "long-awaited social revolution" and
emphatically uttered by many of our community leaders as the "African
Renaissance". Is it a coincidence that it is also the beginning of a new
century and millennium? Perhaps, but highly unlikely!

The African Pharmaceutical Students Federation (APSF) was recently launched
in Cairo, Egypt on the 1st and 2nd of August 2001 by like-minded,
influential, pharmaco-political student leaders who have discussed the
unification of all African pharmaceutical student organisations at great
length for some time. In attendance at the first meeting of the APSF were
delegates from Egypt, Sudan, Tanzania, Kenya, and South Africa. Strong
interest has been expressed by Ghana, Nigeria, Tunisia, and Ethiopia. With
over one hundred pharmacy student leaders networked via e-mail communication
channels across the African continent, the APSF promises to be a resounding
success.

Amongst the many important objectives of the APSF, a few can be noted as
needing priority attention. APSF aims to represent the interests of all
pharmaceutical students in Africa. It seeks to establish an environment of
mutual co-operation to ensure sustainable development. APSF endeavours to
find unique solutions to Africa's pharmaceutical dilemmas by actively
promoting exchange of information and experiences. Cross-cultural exchanges
are vitally important to create tolerance and understanding within a group
of future pharmaceutical professionals.

Acting Executive Committee members have been appointed to lead the APSF to
its first General Assembly to be held in South Africa in September 2002. The
appointed leaders are:

President João Carapinha (South Africa)
Secretary General Samer Kotb (Egypt)
Treasurer Ahmed Abo Hussein (Egypt)
Chairperson of Public Relations Eliphace Mkumbo (Tanzania)
Chairperson of Student Exchange Abualbishr Alshreef (Sudan)
Chairperson of Information and Education Mohammed Abd El Khalik (Egypt)
Chairperson of Special Projects Jerry Nee-Whang (Ghana)
Permanent Officer Yolanda Peens (South Africa)

The APSF Executive Committee will work in close collaboration with the
International Pharmaceutical Students Federation (IPSF). In a coordinated
way it is expected that the potential of African pharmacy students will be
realised in the foreseeable future.
