E-drug: Experience on mobile clinics sought
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Ministry of Health in Yemen has been offered a network of
mobile clinics to serve the 50% of the population that has no
access to clinics or Health Centers. This 50% lives in areas that are
difficult to reach, even by 4-wheel drive vehicles, as roads turn into
tracks and those into paths. Yemen's population of 18.5 million
generally lives in hamlets of between 10 to 30 houses (family
related) not far from each other. There are more than 100.000 of
these hamlets. Part of the population is still nomadic and hard to
find in the desert.

We could imagine that these mobile clinics serve the population as
a general health service at certain times, or that they are dedicated
to a specific service, e.g. EPI, safe motherhood, or related to school
health.

We are seeking your experience in this set up, describing success
and difficulties. What is the sustainability? What is the life time of
vehicles in rugged terrain under such systems? What type of cars
would you advice, horse-trailer system, all in one, or other
innovative ways. What type of service has been successful in your
experience?

You can imagine that if we are to enter in such a venture, we
would like it to be successful. Cost-benefit should be as high as
possible.

Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Dr. Ali Obaid Sallami
Deputy Minister of Health Republic of Yemen
