E-drug: Re: BMJ editor resigns from professorate
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wish to add to the chorus of praise for Richard Smith's courageous
decision to resign in protest against the University of Nottingham's
acceptance of tobacco money. Since the money accepted comes primarily from
the sale of tobacco, the University has not merely "compromised" its ethics
but has made itself *complicit* in the promotion of a demonstrably deadly
product. In a world for sale, where influential authority (e.g. the
academy) can be bought, there is no hope for the poor unless we who are
called upon to sacrifice our interests to protect them are willing to pay a
price. Richard Smith sets an example for those of us claiming to put people
before profits.
The saying goes that shame is the tribute that vice pays to virtue. Mr.
Smith has exacted what is owing from the University of Nottingham.
