Announcement
Training Course on Drug and Therapeutic Committees
October 18-25th 2001
Nairobi, Kenya
A seven day course run by the Pharmaceutical Programme of the World Council
of Churches (WCC) and the Community Initiatives Support Services (CISS),
Nairobi, Kenya, in collaboration with the department of Essential Drugs and
Medicines Policy of WHO Geneva, and the USAID funded Rational
Pharmaceutical
Management Plus Programme (RPM Plus) of Management Sciences for Health
(MSH), USA. The course is designed for physicians, pharmacists, and health
officials in hospitals, ministries of health, universities or private
organizations. Those who are interested in improving the rational use of
drugs through drug and therapeutic committees (DTCs), and who will be in a
position to provide training and technical assistance to other DTCs, are
invited to apply. Candidates with some experience of drug and therapeutic
committees, and who wish to expand their knowledge, are preferred.
Objectives
The training course will focus on the role of the drug and therapeutics
committee in promoting more rational use of drugs. Participants are
expected
to learn about practical approaches for promoting more rational use of
drugs
through the tool of a drug and therapeutics committee. Key features include
the practical aspects of running a DTC, formulary management, standard
treatment guidelines (STGs), essential drug list (formulary list),
indicators of rational use of drugs, and interventions to change
inappropriate use of drugs.
Design
The training course will be conducted in English and will consist of
presentations, discussions, group activities, and field visits. The
training
course is highly participatory, and the exchange of experiences and ideas
among participants adds depth to the learning process. Training course
materials are based on those developed by MSH in collaboration with WHO.
The
participants will be exposed to a wide range of international experiences
and materials.

Faculty
A team of experts from MSH, WHO and the Centre for Essential Drug
Management
and Policy, Nairobi, Kenya. The trainers include:
1. Dr Kathy Holloway is a medical officer in the department of
Essential drugs and Medicines Policy, WHO Geneva, where she is the focal
point for all initiatives concerning the rational use of drugs. She has
over
20 years clinical and public health experience in the UK, Burma, India,
Nepal, latterly focusing in the area of promoting rational use of drugs.
2. Dr. John Chalker is a medical doctor working with Management
Sciences of Health as the global program coordinator for the Rational
Pharmaceutical Management Plus program. He has thirteen years of experience
of designing, implementing and managing health development projects at
local, regional and national level in countries in Asia, Africa and the
Middle East. He has worked with key academic institutions in designing and
coordinating research on ways of improving rational drug use.
3. Terry Green: has served as a long-term advisor in the republic of
Palau . Mr. Green has more than 20 years of experience as a clinical
pharmacist for the U.S. Public Health Service, serving mostly in the Indian
Health Service. In addition to his pharmacy degree, he has certification as
a pharmacist/clinician and wrote a good part of the course material
4. Prof. Gilbert Kokwaro is Professor of Pharmaceutics at the
University of Nairobi, and Visiting Professor of Pharmacology and
Therapeutics at the University of Liverpool, U.K. He has taught at the
University for 20 years, and has wide experience in therapeutics, rational
drug use, clinical research and the essential drug concept. He is also the
executive Director of the Centre for Drug Management and Policy (CEDMAP)
based in Nairobi, Kenya.
5. Dr Eva Ombaka is a pharmacist working with the Pharmaceutical
Programme of WCC/CISS. She has more than 20 years experience in various
areas of pharmacy having worked as a lecturer at University of Dar es
Salaam, Technical Manager in a drug -manufacturing unit and as a
Pharmaceutical Advisor to the World Council of Churches. She has
participated and facilitated several international courses on promoting
rational drug use.
Fees and Application
The fee of 900 USD covers tuition, training course materials, shared
accommodation, and all meals except evening dinner. Those unwilling to
share accommodation must be prepared to pay an extra 35 USD per night for
single rooms. Participants will be provided with 20 USD per day to cover
expenses for regular dinners that will not be provided by the organisers.
Please note that participants will not be paid 20 USD per day for periods
of
stay longer than the course arising as a result of personal reasons or
delayed travel schedules. Participants should also plan to bring sufficient
money for incidental expenses like laundry, postage, phone calls, etc.
Airfare and health insurance are the responsibility of the sponsoring
organization. Applications and fees are due no later than September 10th
2001. Due to limited seats available (25 international participants),
